Cuts lead Greek Public Radio to a partial medium-wave switch-off

After a meeting on February 17, the Administrative Board of the Greek Public Broadcaster (ERT) ordered the switch-off of eleven medium wave transmitters (MW) whereas only nine medium wave transmitters with their respective programs of the Greek Public Radio will keep operating. As it can been seen in the tables and the map below, in fact it is the high-power transmitters that survive, most of which are located near the border and had been used previously for the "International Network of ERA". Additionally ERT retains the frequency of the “First Radio Service” (729) and “Filía” (666) from Attica, and also the one of ERA Sport (792) hosted by the former Voice of America transmitter that was re-installed in 2002 at Malgara. A relatively low power transmitter in Florina will also be retained, probably because of its location being nearby to the FYROM.

The switch-off includes many historical transmitters; most of them have gracefully served YENED [military radio] and [its successor] ERA since the '60s and hosted initially the tranmissions of all regional services of ERA, before FM emerged as a technology. Their FM network started being installed during the early '90s and will remain as the only broadcasting medium for the regional stations that loose their medium wave transmitters. Nevertheless, including the FM transmitters installed after 2000, it seems to cover most of the regional stations' areas of interest. Though, no survey suggesting statistics for the medium wave listenership has seen the light. Please note that due to the transmission mode, as opposed to that of FM, medium wave propagates over long distances and can "overcome" great obstacles, which is valuable in mountainous areas; but it is an old technology with poor sound quality and tends to being abandoned.
The decision of the ERT has already started being implemented. It has already been confirmed that the transmitter E.RA. Sports in Attica (erstwhile YENED historical frequency), the transmitter of 9.58 of ERT3 at Malgara (1179) and those of E.RA. Tripoli (1314) and Orestiada (1080) have been already switched off. With this decision, ERT revoked any previous decision concerning the closure of AM transmitters. The official document was posted online and archived under the topic "Culture and Leisure" (!)
In our future articles we plan to deal with any problems caused by the switch-off. As the main reason given was to save energy, we should mention that the switched off transmitters had a cumulative power of 500 KW, while the ones which remain in operation consume about 760KW.
The tables and the map indicate the stations that remain in operation according to the announcement made by ERT, and the ones which cease operation as estimated by subtraction. The last list contains probably two stations that seems to have been out of operation in recent years, due to decommissioning of obsolete equipment and lack of qualified personnel, without having been officially dismissed (probably in Larissa and Heraklion).

No electricity - No QRM

Last night, there was major electric failure in my area of the town, because of the heavy snow, falling from the roofs of a house nearby. It was great time for DX-ing. I received a lot of VOLMET stations from Western Europe and North America, as well as some pirates from Netherlands as well as Pyongyang BS on 6400kHz with SINPO: 55555 and Voice Of The People with huge signal on 6515 and 6600kHz, but curious about the whole thing was that I didn't notice North Korean jamming on the two frequencies, or the jamming was too weak. More logs later.

Strange stuff

The HF spectrum was (during the Cold Wave Era) and it's still full of strange stuff, here is a unidentified secret service, broadcasting in German. It's probably a pirate broadcast in the middle of the free radio band. Certainly a looped mp3 recording from a DFS 904 documentation page!

DFS 904 was a propaganda station from East Germany in the cold war. These messages, sent during night, were absolutely nonsense and were intended to pretend it was an underground station operated by banned communists in Western Germany. Uhh, those were the times!

Despite there is much snow in my QTH, I decided to align my satellite dish and LNB (Paraclipse Hydro 228cm with Invacom SNF-031) to check if I can lock some transponders on the new Astra 1N satellite, beaming UK and Ireland with BBC, Channel 4 and ITV channels. The recording of the E25 Numbers station from Egypt, I made a week and a half ago... By the way, today's conditions on the higher frequencies are pretty good, heard some HAM activity on 28MHz from Spain, Norway and Russia. The MIKES Espoo time signal station came with excellent signal. Weak, but audible at times speech on 26MHz, Radio Maria in AM? They broadcast both in AM (26000kHz) and DRM (26010kHz).

I have not received any QSL cards from All India Radio emailed reports yet, but I'm going to send another by post on Monday. By the way, I got very interested in the AIR domestic services, while scanning the 60m. broadcasting band earlier today on my remote location in the village of Patreshko, high in the mountain (700 metres), far away from any local QRM. Most of the AIR stations popped up with strong signal, playing beautiful traditional music from the Indian subcontinent. I'll try to verify as many transmitter sites as I can (it would be interesting for you to know, that there are 26 shortwave transmitter sites in India), including Gangtok, Chennai, Guwahati, which I observed today, and of course the ones of the General Overseas Service of AIR.

And now for something completely different!

Before the break-up of the Soviet Union it was almost impossible to get any information about the transmitter sites used by Radio Moscow. As noted above, Radio Moscow often used fake transmitter sites locations on many occasions in their schedules and QSLs. When QSLing Radio Moscow broadcasts, it was almost impossible to predict what site would be indicated on the card. This led at least one CADX member to desperation. Tom Ross, back in 1987 and 1988 vented his frustration, when he could not QSL the sites he needed by putting his thoughts into lyrics. Enclosed below are the results of his frustrations. They first appeared in DX Chicago in 1987 and 1988. Hope you enjoy them.

I'd like to remind all pirate stations and listeners around the world that next HF-Weekend will be 14-15.1.2012 !

That would be a test-weekend for pirates from all over the world to broadcast on High Frequencies 10 - 28 MHz (mostly on 15-22 MHz) !! Still much time for preparing things.

So, I hope also pirate stations from USA and Canada will join this weekend trying to reach Europe and also Asia/Oceania !!
I think that the stations should prefere frequencies between 21.450 - 21.550 MHz and 15.000 - 15.100 MHz, but of course anything goes.

There seems to have been visitors to my blog from all over the world. So, let's hope that we will have new listeners from South America and Asia etc. Big antennas and receivers NOT needed for very long skips.

Sombre pages in the history of radio broadcasting in Bulgaria
On November 24, 1941 the State Protection Act took force in Bulgaria, which penalized the listening of foreign radio stations. To that date Bulgaria knew only restrictions that had been introduced in the 1920s and that were related to high excise duties, subscriptions and registrations. In 1939 when World War II broke out, the German troops headed for the Balkans. Without any resistance from their allies in Hungary and Romania they occupied Yugoslavia and reached the Bulgarian borders. However, the pro-German affiliations took over among the Bulgarian authorities, and Bulgaria joined the Pact set up by Germany, Italy and Japan. At that time there were a few thousand radio sets, the majority of them receiving on long, medium and short waves, located mostly in the cities but also in some of the bigger villages, and especially those that had electricity. In the smaller villages only the village pub, the mayor’s office and the wealthier villagers had wireless using electricity from batteries. The radio broadcasts included programmes of Radio Sofia, but there were certain slots in which Radio Varna and Radio Stara Zagora also aired their own broadcasts. After the Bulgarian troops entered Skopje the local radio station joined the network of Bulgarian radio programmes on medium waves on April 20, 1941. By November 24 that same year the Bulgarian radio listeners could tune in freely to any foreign radio station. After that date they could no longer do that because of the legal ban. The punishment for listening to radio broadcasts from abroad or lending their wireless to third parties to listen to such broadcasts was more than 5 years in prison and confiscation of the radio set plus a huge fine. To that end special committees toured the country and sealed the tuners with red wax so that listeners could only receive Radio Sofia, Radio Varna, Radio Stara Zagora and Radio Skopje. What is more they collected tax from the radio listeners for the kind of service the state had just performed. However, there were people who broke the law and listened illegally to the foreign radio stations. The interval signal of radio London or BBC, which represented the Morse coding of the letter V for Victory, was used as a password for exchanging commentaries on what they had just heard on the wireless. When they met they tapped each other three times on the elbow and one time on the wrist, which was the equivalent of the Morse code for the letter V. The ban on listening foreign radio stations included also the allied German stations for the Balkans, such as Voice of South East Radio and Radio Danube. The Soviet authorities found an original way to broadcast their propaganda. On October 7, 1941 they started broadcasting programmes of Radio Voice of the People on the wavelengths of the Bulgarian radio stations, and in the intervals between Radio Sofia’s news bulletins a voice was heard that disproved what had just been reported. The ban was dropped in 1944. But then radio listeners were ahead of even harder times which ended in late 1989.

On December 1, 1951 the most powerful transmitter on short waves began broadcasting on 7670 kHz 15 kW. On December 1, 1925 Radio Budapest, Hungary aired its first broadcast. On December 3 China Radio International celebrated its 70^th anniversary.

Broadcast tips
MADAGASCAR: The test transmissions of Radio Netherlands in Dutch and English from the Swedish transmitter located in Madagascar were received here from 21 to 25 November from 7 and from 14 hours on 21480 KHz with strong signal.
RUSSIA: On 24 November during the break of Radio Rassii broadcast on 9840 KHz here was observed radio Voice of Russia in English. Heard also on 12030 KHz. It was between 4 & 6 h from transmitters located near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii in Far East.
ALBANIA: China Radio International using transmitters located in Albania was heard on 24 November on harmonic frequencies as follows: at 9 h on 18920&14570 KHz during its program in Romanian and also at 11 h on 14440 KHz in Bulgarian.
INDIA: All India Radio Local News Studio was heard with news in English on 23 November from 15.30 h on 4895 , 4910 , 4920 , 4950 , 5010 and 9425 KHz. Another program in English was noted on next day at 14.15h on 9690, 11620 and 13710 KHz.
CUBA: Radio Havana Cuba with news bulletin in English was heard from 06.00 h on 6060 KHz. The frequencies announced were 6000, 6050, 6060 and 6150 KHz but only 6060 was noted here on 23 November.
LIBYA: Libya is again on short waves and was heard at 16 h with the beginning of program on 11600 KHz until end of the broadcast at 18.10 h. All of the program was in French on 23 November.

ELWA burnt to the ground on Tuesday night

One of Liberia’s oldest radio stations has been destroyed again. The Monrovia-based Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) burnt to the ground on Tuesday night. Lee Sonius with HCJB Global says, “They lost everything. I’ve already seen some pictures of the building, and the destruction was quite widespread. They lost all of their equipment, programmes, and music.”

The fire started around 9 pm local time. As to its cause, “The cause of the fire has not been completely determined yet, but it doesn’t look like it was due to an electrical problem.” Several reports coming out of Liberia have been hinting at arson connected to political unrest.

After speaking with the station manager, Sonius explains: “The investigation is leading more toward the possibility that it was arson, or that it was intentionally set. Because the run-off election was yesterday, I asked him (the station manager) if he thought it could have anything to do with the election, and he said, ‘Well, I can’t rule that out.’”

The good news is that the transmitter was in a separate building and is unharmed by the fire. Sonius adds that “they actually had a small, emergency portable studio at the site of the transmitter. They are already back on the air in a temporary way.”

Sonius was ELWA’s station manager in 1990 when civil war first destroyed the facility. In 1996, radio ELWA was silenced again during renewed fighting. The staff, with the help of SIM, regrouped and rebuilt. Seven years later, HCJB came on board to help provide most of the resources for short-wave broadcasts from a unique transmitter and antenna, which they developed and installed.

The staff is shell-shocked, says Sonius. “I think the staff at this point must be thinking, ‘Why is all of this happening?’” However, Sonius says they’ve come back from total destruction before. “We have seen their resilience in the past, and the ministry has been going on. So I would be very, very surprised if the staff doesn’t get behind rebuilding and getting the Gospel back on the air.”

Their ministry journey together will continue, says Sonius. “HCJB definitely wants to help, and that’s why I called them this afternoon to just assure them of our intention to help get them back on the air. Obviously, they’ll need to rebuild, and they’ll need all the studio equipment.”

The radio station daily broadcast eight hours of English programming and one and a half hours of Liberian language programming. About three-quarters of the station’s income come from local listeners and churches. Both SIM and HCJB are raising funds to help.

Radio Prague QSL card

The three letters - QSL - constitute one of the codes originally developed in the days of the telegraph. All codes consisted of three letters beginning with "Q". Later some of these "Q" codes were adopted by radio-telegraphists and radio listeners. QSL means "contact confirmed" or "reception confirmed".

The expression "QSL card" or just "QSL" gradually came to be used among radio-amateurs and then more broadly as radio began to develop as a mass medium. Radio stations were keen to know how well and how far away their programmes could be heard and began to send their listeners "QSL cards" in return for reception reports. The card would include letters making up the "call sign" of the station - the system still used in the United States - or the broadcasting company's logo or some other illustration. The card would also include a text stating the frequency and the transmitter output power, and a confirmation of when the listener heard the station.

Domestic broadcasters do not tend to use QSL cards these days, but their popularity remains among radio stations broadcasting internationally. They are still keen to know how well they can be heard in the parts of the world to which they broadcast. In the era of shortwave broadcasts Radio Prague sent out QSL cards for reception reports received. After curtailing our shortwave transmissions as of February 1, 2011 we will continue issuing QSL cards for reception via the Internet.
