A rather strange way to learn that LRA36 has resumed broadcasts today has just happened:

Mirta, co-announcer of R Arcángel San Gabriel, during the 2012 Antarctic Campaign has just commented in a post of my blog "La Galena del Sur" featuring the station on Aug. 2012, that they are on the air from today on.

This is the message posted as a comment that I am roughly translating from Spanish:

"My name is Mirta and I share the studio, during this year 2012 at Base Esperanza station, with two more partners and the technical operator and we are very excited because today we returned to convey to everyone after the repair of equipment. We are proud to share this news with everyone!"

Original text in Spanish:

"Mi nombre es Mirta y durante este año 2012 comparto el estudio de la emisora en base Esperanza junto a 2 compañeras más y el operador técnico y estamos muy emocionados por que hoy volvimos a transmitir para todo el mundo luego de la reparacion de los equipos. World DX Club to close down

November 3, 2012

It has been announced that the World DX Club (WDXC) is to close, a final issue of Contact magazine is to be published in December.For 44 years the club have published their newsletter Contact magazine every month, containing station logs, news, information and comment about radio and radio broadcasts, both current and historical, primarily, but not exclusively, international shortwave radio.Regretfully due to health reasons Arthur and Olive Ward have had to step down from their club duties in charge of membership subscriptions, dispatch of bulletins as well as many contributions to the content of Contact over the years. Arthur became club printer in July 1974 and added his secretarial role in December 1979.This leaves the club with too few voluntary staff for the work involved and it has been decided to cease publication of Contact. It is understood that outstanding subscriptions are to be transferred to the British DX Club for UK and overseas members outside of North America and to the North American Shortwave Association for North American members.

CRTC extends broadcast license for Sackville’s North Quebec Service until Dec 1

According to this article (see clipping below) the CRTC “mistakenly” listed the end date of RCI Sackville’s (call sign CKCX-SW) shortwave service to North Quebec as November 1, 2012. The CRTC has now amended the decision with an end date of December 1st, 2012.

The official revocation of the license of the CBC’s shortwave CKCX-SW/SACKVILLE, NB has been amended to DECEMBER 1st.  In an initial ruling on the requested revocation, the CRTC mistakenly listed the end date as NOVEMBER 1st.  The station is being shut down because of the grant of low-power repeaters for CBC RADIO ONE station CFFB/IQUALUIT, NUNAVUT at PURVIRNITUQ, KUUJJUARAPIK, INUKJUAK, SALLUIT, and KUUJJUAQ, NUNAVIT, all on 103.5 FM with 50 watts each.

BBC Drastic cuts

Short wave broadcasts of World Service Arabic will end by next April, while the Cyprus short wave relay station will close.

World Service English short wave transmissions will be reduced to six hours a day, with 1.5m listeners likely to be lost as a result. Currently, there are between seven and 19 hours of short wave depending on region.
The distribution changes - which include cuts to medium wave transmissions - are designed to save £4.8m in 2013/14. It's a large chunk of the £12m savings the World Service is targetting in its third phase of cuts as a result of a 16% reduction to its grant-in-aid.
An estimated 3% of the Arabic audience is likely to be lost when the eight hours a day of Arabic short wave in the Middle East is halted. A short wave service will continue in troubled Sudan where there's a 'strong need' for humanitarian information and access to other platforms is limited.
Many Middle East viewers will be able to receive Arabic tv direct from satellite.

Medium wave

Another 1% of the audience will go when Middle East medium wave transmissions are reduced outside peak hours.
The Arabic medium wave service to Syria and Lebanon will be cut from 18 hours a day to eight, while the service to Egypt will drop to six hours from 17.5.
English medium wave to Israel, Lebanon and Jordan will also be slashed from 16-18 hours daily to four.
Cyprus station

The closure of the Cyprus short wave relay station will see the loss of 26 jobs. 
These are Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Babcock employees who are funded by the World Service.
Peter Horrocks said that the changes reflected listening trends, as audiences increasingly embrace tv, mobiles and the internet over short wave radio.
'The changes are in line with our overall strategic aim of ensuring that we are able to respond to changing audience needs and invest in the way audiences consume news,' he said.
'Short wave audiences are declining as radio audiences come to rely increasingly on medium wave and FM, and there has been a rapid growth of television and digital media.'
The government's 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review set the World Service the target of saving £42m by April 2014. It has already achieved nearly £30m with the loss of five language services and around 480 jobs.

Stop CBC from dismantling our transmitters to the world

See updates below – In the next few days the transmission lines that allow Canada to broadcast to the world will be taken down one by one. For more than 67 years Radio Canada International’s shortwave transmitters have guaranteed that Canada’s voice would be heard despite the Cold War, despite natural disasters, and Internet blocking. Now this efficient, cost effective communications tool will be dismantled by Canada’s public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada.

Those of us who understand how important this lifeline to the world is to world communication are sick to our stomachs at the rapidity with which the broadcaster wants to make the transmitters disappear. Shortwave broadcasts of Radio Canada International ended on June 24, 2012. Other countries’ use of our transmitters will end on October 31.

But CBC/Radio-Canada has already started the process of dismantling unused transmitters, and will start taking down still functioning transmission lines very shortly.

Why are they in such a hurry?

CBC/Radio-Canada has never understood the importance of international broadcasting, and is betting that Canadians will ignore the fact that a web-only service has limited impact while shortwave radio can reach more than 800 million radio receivers around the world.

The short sightedness of administrators obsessed with web page clicks fails to take into account that shortwave not only transmits radio broadcasts, but has been used for teletype and data transmission. Recent experiments reveal that with free software, shortwave signals could transmit texts where the Internet is not available. A tool that once again would get past Internet blocking, natural disasters, and wars.

The transmitters are there, they don’t cost much to maintain. Why do we want to cut ourselves off from being able to communicate with the world? Who should be making these decisions?

UPDATE: October 23, 2012 – Five transmission lines have already been taken down! Two are in the process of being dismantled. By next week almost all of the 28 lines will be dismantled. Only two will remain temporarily for the Quebec Northern Service.

NEW DXPedition

A new DXPedition will be held on the 26th through 28th of October 2012 by me and my friend and fellow DX-er - Ivo Ivanov. We will use a Sony ICF-2010D receiver with built-in sync detector, two AM filters (narrow: 3kHz and wide: 6kHz) and USB/LSB/CW. We have already installed there beverage antennas (100m) to Western Europe and North America, to Africa and to South Asia and Australia. Our main goal will be to clarify the B-12 schedules of the international broadcasters from all over the world. It would be a real challenge for us but we hope we will be able to succeed.
