ERA Rhodes is back on a historical frequency

Another change concerning the mediumwave broadcasting of the public Greek Radio service took place a few weeks ago. The mediumwave transmitter of ERA Rhodes now broadcasts to a new frequency, as it moved from the frequency of 1494 KHz to 1260, late December. The new frequency appears to be extremely clear in terms of interference. The transmitter coverage during the day reaches the island of Crete, while in the evening it also covers quite well northern Greece and a large area of the Balkans.

It should be noted, for historical reasons, that the frequency of 1260 was used until recently by the VOA.In 1952, they began broadcasting services in Arabic, Turkish and English language to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The broadcast was originally done from a ship off the coast of Rhodes, with a mediumwave antenna hung onto helium balloons, whereas in 1964 a transmitter on the territory of the island was built. Voice of America had given exceptional attention to specific frequency for 60 years and relayed its program with a powerful AM transmitter power 500 KW, while in 1977 it became the first station fed via satellite from the central studio in Washington.The first service of ERA also used to be relayed for three hours daily (12.00 until 15.00) from this frequency.

The second frequency of the Voice of America, at 792 KHz from Kavala, is now used by the E.RA. Sports, which broadcasts from New Malgara, Thessaloniki.

If we are allowed to comment, perhaps we would suggest reconsidering the content of programs broadcasted by the specific frequency of Rhodes. Particularly inthe evening, the multicultural but purely musical, service named Kosmos is being sent. Perhaps it would be a better idea to play something more multilingual and informative, taking advantage of the extended coverage and the history of frequency.
